A skateboard is usually a specially designed plywood board combined with a polyurethane coating that is used to make smooth slides and strong durability, used mainly for skateboarding activities. The first skateboards to reach public notice came out of the surf craze of the early 1960s, which was developed to help surfers practice when the wave was unfavorable. The first prototype of a simple wooden board with roller skates attached, and the practice was sometimes referred to as “surfing sidewalks.” The surfing group Jan and Dean even had a small hit called “Sidewalk Surfing” in 1964. In the mid-1980s skateboards were mass produced and sold throughout the United States.
A skateboard is driven by pushing with one foot, while remaining the other on the board, or by pumping someone’s foot in a structure such as a swimming pool or half pipe. A skateboard can also be used only by standing on a temporary deck on a downward slope and allowing gravity to push the board and the rider. If the rider positions their right foot forward, he says riding “ridiculous”, if the rider positions their left foot forward, he says riding “normal.” If the driver is usually ordinary but chooses to ride silly, he is said to ride a “switch,” and vice versa. A skater is usually more comfortable pedaling with their hind legs; choosing to pedal with the front legs is often referred to as riding “Mongo.”
Recently, electric skateboards also appeared. This no longer requires pushing a skateboard by using the foot, but rather an electric motor pushing the board, fed by an electric battery.
There is no body that states all the rules about what constitutes a skateboard or what parts are assembled. Historically, skateboarding has been suitable both for contemporary trends and to an ever-growing array of actions performed by motorists / users, which require certain functionality of the board. Of course, the shape of the board is very dependent on the function desired. Longboards are a type of skateboard with longer wheelbases and bigger, softer wheels.

The descriptions of the following skateboard parts are the most common in the popular, modern form of skateboarding. There are many niche disciplines with exotic or alternative constructions and designs that are beyond many listed descriptions. The usual parts for designing a complete skateboard are deck, truck, wheels, bearings, hardware, and griptape.
Deck
Most decks are built with six to seven-layer cross-laminated wood. Some of them have special materials that help to keep the deck from breaking: such as fiberglass, bamboo, resin, Kevlar, carbon fiber, aluminum, and plastic. Some decks are made of ply maples which are dyed to create various layers of different colors. Modern decks vary in size, but are mostly 7-10.5 inches (17.78-26.67 cm) wide. Wider decks can be used for greater stability when transitioning or ramp skating. Skateboard decks are usually between 28 and 33 inches (71.12 cm and 83.82) long. The bottom of the deck can be printed with a design by the manufacturer, blank, or decorated in other ways. In early 2010 a European Gravitis Company introduced a proprietary asymmetrical form, with decentered twin tips to improve motorist attitude.
Grip tape, when applied to the top surface of the skateboard, gives the skater grip on the deck. It is most often black but can come in a variety of colors including clear, so that the top of the deck is to be decorated. It has back adhesive and tops like sandpaper.
