Howard swim team, in historic meet, elevates Black profile in the sport

Among the first indications something special was happening at Howard were DC police vehicles, lights flashing, blocking a handful of side streets along a stretch of Georgia Avenue in Northwest where the university’s athletic facilities are located.

Inside Burr Gymnasium, henceforth, thumping beats reverberated over the sound system as students, parents, alumni and Bison supporters milled about in the corridors while other patrons patiently but eagerly waited in line to have their tickets scanned.

The draw on a soggy and overcast afternoon was a swim meet against crosstown rival Georgetown billed as the Battle at the Burr, where an announced crowd of 2,000-plus packed the seating area above the pool for the sold-out event organizers indicated was the most attended aquatics competition in school history.

Overflow viewing for the late-arriving set was available through windows lining the hallway on the main concourse and in front of a VIP section dubbed

Alabama vs. Arkansas live stream, watch online, TV channel, kickoff time, football game odds, spread

A heavyweight battle in the SEC West headlines on Saturday as No. 2 Alabama hits the road to take on No. 20 Arkansas on the SEC on CBS Game of the Week. The Crimson Tide roll in to Fayetteville, Arkansas, with a record of 4-0 and are coming off of two easy victories; the Tide took down Vanderbilt 55-3 last week after beating ULM 63-7 the week before. Those results looked a lot different than the one from Week 2 when Alabama narrowly avoided an upset in a road game against Texas.

Arkansas wasn’t as lucky last week. The Razorbacks have spent all week trying to shake the image of Cam Little’s 42-yard field goal attempt bouncing off the top of the upright instead of going through with 90 seconds left in the game. Those lost three points loomed large in a 23-21 loss to rival Texas A&M. Now, the

Virginia Football Lands Commitment From Safety Trent Baker-Booker

It wasn’t all bad news for the UVA football program this weekend. Virginia picked up a 2023 recruiting commitment from Indianapolis safety Trent Baker-Booker late on Saturday night.

While Virginia’s trip to Durham this weekend was hardly a success, the Cavaliers can at the very least appreciate a much-needed victory on the recruiting trail. Last weekend, a loss at Syracuse was worsened by the decommitment of defensive lineman Rodney Lora. This time around, some news on the recruiting front might serve to take away the sting of the loss as the Hoos land a commitment from a talented and athletic defensive back.

At 6’3″, Baker-Booker has the height and athleticism to defend against big and physical receivers. He has shown tremendous playmaking abilities and ball skills through the first half of his senior season at Lawrence Central, the same Indianapolis high school that produced UVA basketball legend Kyle Guy.

174 dead after fans stampede to exit Indonesian soccer match

MALANG, Indonesia (AP) — The death toll from panic at an Indonesian soccer match climbed to 174, most of whom trampled to death after police fired tear gas to dispel riots Saturday, making it one of the deadliest sports events in the world.

Riots broke out after the game ended Saturday evening with host Arema FC of East Java’s Malang city losing to Persebaya of Surabaya 3-2.

Disappointed after their team’s loss, thousands of supporters of Arema, known as “Aremania,” reacted by throwing bottles and other objects at players and soccer officials. Fans flooded the Kanjuruhan Stadium pitch in protest and demanded that Arema management explain why, after 23 years of undefeated home games, this match ended in a loss, witnesses said.

The rioting spread outside the stadium where at least five police vehicles were toppled and set ablaze amid the chaos. Riot police responded by firing tear gas, including

Spain women’s soccer players resign en masse amid fight with federation, coach

Fifteen of Spain’s top women’s soccer players are declining to play for the Spanish national team until working conditions improve, and alleged in Thursday emails that the situation around the team had “significantly” affected their “emotional state” and “health,” Spain’s soccer federation (the RFEF) and the players said in partially conflicting statements Thursday and Friday.

The temporary resignations come weeks after a few Spanish stars reportedly urged head coach Jorge Vilda to step down, and asked RFEF president Luis Rubiales to fire Vilda. Both men reportedly refused.

On Friday, the players clarified in their statement that they have not “renounced” the national team; they have, though, said they will not play for it until the situation is “reversed.” In the statement, they cited an environment that has harmed their “emotional and personal state,” and harmed the performance and results of the team, and led to “undesirable injuries.”

Prisco’s NFL Week 3 picks: Aaron Rodgers gets revenge on Tom Brady and Buccaneers, Patriots sneak past Ravens

It was a good solid start for my picks in Week 2 — which I will take considering how crazy the second week of an NFL season can be after the uncertainty of Week 1. Get-even week can be challenging.

I went 9-7 against the spread in our CBSSports Expert picks, 10-6 straight up and 3-2 with my best bet as part of the Pick Six Podcast. That brings my record ATS to 17-15, 17-14-1 straight up and 8-3 with my best batch.

The best batch should have been 4-1, but the Rams dozed off late and let the Falcons get the cover after dominating most of the game.

That happens. But if I can go 8-3 with the best batch every two weeks, I will take it.

This week features some great matchups, but it also features games where I think the line is a little out of whack.

What are the most popular high school sports? Here are some takeaways from the latest national survey

While overall participation is down, the survey found increased participation in a number of sports, with golf standing out as the only sport to see an increase among boys.

“Given what has occurred in our country the past three years, we believe a decline of only four percent in participation totals from 2018-19 is pretty remarkable,” said Karissa Niehoff, CEO of the NFHS. “We know some states that were able to complete surveys in 2020-21 reported participation increases this past year. So, we are very optimistic that the trend will continue in the years to come as schools fully recover from the effects of the 2020 shutdown.”

Here are a few key data points.

While participation in 11-player football was down three percent (1,006,013 to 973,792), there was a 12 percent increase in 6-, 8-,
